Despite being molecularly different substances, both of these come from the same class of medications known as Z-drugs, non-benzodiazepines or sedative hypnotics. Both of these medications were originally patented and manufactured by companies which now belong to the French pharmaceutical company Sanofi-Aventis. Zopiclone is the generic name given to the medicine commonly branded as Zimovane and Zolpidem is the name given to the medication most popularly known as Ambien.
They both work by affecting a chemical in the brain called Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid (also known as GABA). GABA slows down the signals in the brain leaving users feeling more relaxed and calmer. Along with benzodiazepines, which may also be used to treat insomnia or anxiety, these medications can have negative effects on REM sleep. This can prevent users from achieving a deep state of sleep. Clinical studies show that deep sleep is responsible for learning, memory and healthy brain development.
Both are prescribed for the short-term treatment of different types of insomnia such as; acute insomnia (1-week of sleep problems or less), transient insomnia (3 months of sleep problems or less) and chronic insomnia (over 3 months of sleep problems). They share many similarities in their abilities in helping patients overcome symptoms of insomnia. Despite this, studies have also shown potential for their anti-convulsant, anxiolytic and myorelaxant properties.
An extensive double-blind test was done on citizens in Japan which concluded they are just as good as each other in the treatment of insomnia, with very slight differences. When looking at these medications, the clear differences only seem to be the specifics of dose sizes, recommended treatment duration, medication form and half-lives. When we look at the side effects and withdrawal symptoms that users have reported, there seem to be very slim differences.
Many struggle to find the difference between zopiclone and zolpidem as they have the same effects on the body and mind. The latter comes in 5mg or 10mg Immediate-release tablets that last 6-8 hours and are prescribed to those who have difficulties falling asleep. It also comes in a two-layered Controlled-release form of 12.5mg tablets which can last 8-10 hours. This CR form is for patients who have severe difficulties staying asleep through the night.
Zopiclone tablets usually come in either 7.5mg or 10mg film coated pills. There is no extended or controlled release form of this medication as it has a longer duration of action of around 8-9 hours. Treatment with this medication normally lasts between 2-4 weeks. As they have similar effects, it can usually come down to personal experience or preference. Some may consider changing from zopiclone to zolpidem if the results of their current treatments are not satisfactory.
When looking at the side effects of both zolpidem or zopiclone, there are many similarities with some differences. For example, with the former, only 5.8% of users reported a bitter or metallic taste in their mouths when awakening. With zopiclone sleeping pills, as many as 40% experienced this side effect. Aside from this, the side effects documented for both are; drowsiness, dizziness, depression and forgetfulness.
In more severe cases people may experience; hallucinations, delusions, amnesia, reduced motor function and seizures. Studies concluded that Ambien showed less signs of rebound insomnia and withdrawal and that patients tolerated it better than other Z-drug medications. Most side effects normally resolve within 8 to 10 hours and it is normal to feel tiredness in the morning after taking these medications.
If zopiclone side effects persist or become difficult to deal with, it is strongly advised that patients contact their doctors for help and advice.
When browsing through online pharmacies, users may come across reviews that have been left by customers who have taken medications in the past for treatment. Sometimes these user reviews can be an important part in deciding which medication could work best for them. By comparing user reviews of zopiclone vs ambien, customers can consider the suitability of either medication to their current conditions and choose accordingly.
These review systems do not just give customers an opportunity to share their experiences with medications to help other people. They can also help websites develop and improve their products and services appropriately based on the feedback left by users.
Both medications have been thoroughly tested before being licensed and approved by the FDA. This means that they have been proven to be safe and effective in treating insomnia in adults over 18 years old when instructions are properly followed. People who suffer from; sleep apnea, myasthenia gravis, severe liver disease or respiratory problems should not buy zopiclone or other Z-drug medications.
These medications should in no circumstances be taken at the same time as this can amplify the effects. If users feel drowsy in the morning after taking these medications, it is important that they avoid driving or operating heavy machinery. Always store these medications at 25°C and out of the sight and reach of children. To prevent Z-drug or zopiclone withdrawal, users should always incorporate a tapering off schedule when nearing the end of their treatments on these medications.
By following a treatment plan and taking the lowest doses possible to reach the desired effect, users can look forward to restoring their natural sleep-wake cycles. Changes which should be considered as part of treatments for insomnia would be; sleeping at the same times every day, avoiding sugar and caffeine in the evenings and exercising. These changes, if continued post treatment, can also prevent the likelihood of rebound insomnia.
